About the expedition
ABISKO: In search of the northern lights. A photography trip to the heart of Swedish Lapland.
This is one of those trips that will stay with you forever. If you are looking for a trip designed specifically to maximise your chances of seeing and photographing the northern lights in unique locations away from the crowds, keep reading…
Abisko National Park, in northern Sweden, in the heart of Swedish Lapland, is one of the best places on the planet to see and photograph the northern lights. We are not the ones saying it: it is backed by the Swedish Institute of Space Physics itself. They have been monitoring aurora visibility in the region since 1957. Their data shows that Abisko records approximately 159 nights a year with visible auroras out of the 212 nights that are physically dark enough for the northern lights to be seen. In percentage terms, this means that statistically the probability of seeing auroras in this region is 75 to 80 %. Abisko lies at approximately 68 degrees north latitude, a privileged position for observing the northern lights. The combination of solar activity, latitude, winter darkness and favourable weather conditions makes Abisko National Park one of the best places on the planet to photograph the northern lights.
Our guide will be Eduardo Marcos Quevedo, one of the best photographers of this specialty in Spain, in a small group of a maximum of 7 participants.

After breakfast, during the day, we will take short routes in the surroundings, in the Abiskojåkka river canyon and around the immense Lake Torneträsk. This is an enormous, deep lake, with a surface area of approximately 330 km², a length of about 69 km and a maximum depth of 168 metres. It is one of the most important mountain lakes in Scandinavia.

In the morning, we will head to Kiruna. We will spend the morning discovering some of its most interesting corners, strolling through its snow-covered streets, among coloured houses and winter landscapes that reflect the charm of this Arctic region. We will visit its emblematic church of modernist architecture, one of the most representative buildings in the city, and learn a little more about the history and daily life of this mining town, shaped by harsh climatic conditions and its close relationship with nature.
In the afternoon, we will venture into one of the most spectacular landscapes of Swedish Lapland with an excursion to Nikkaluokta, a small village at the foot of the Kebnekaise massif, the highest mountain in Sweden, at approximately 2,100 metres in altitude. The route will take us along roads surrounded by boreal forests, valleys, mountains, huge lakes and always following the Kalix river valley, on a quiet route in which we will enjoy the immensity of the Arctic landscape.
Along the way, we will keep our eyes wide open to try to spot the wildlife characteristic of the region, especially moose and reindeer, which live in these forests and open spaces. Although sightings of animals are never guaranteed, the route itself offers a magnificent opportunity to enjoy nature in its purest state.
Once in the Nikkaluokta area, we will be able to admire the impressive mountains of the Kebnekaise range, whose peaks dominate the horizon and offer an unforgettable image of the wildest Lapland.
We will make the most of the last hours of the day to enjoy the sunset, when the light takes on special tones over the mountains and the snow, creating a magical atmosphere.
As night falls, and always depending on solar activity and the weather, we will consider whether to stay in the area or return to Abisko for another northern lights photo session.

Today we will visit the Jukkasjärvi area, a village that combines several very representative aspects of Swedish Lapland. On the one hand, it is home to the famous ICE HOTEL, on the banks of the Torne river, from which blocks of ice are extracted every year during the winter, so that artists can sculpt the wonderful works of art housed inside the ICE HOTEL. We will visit the ICE HOTEL (included).
On the other hand, the nearby nature allows us to enjoy forests, lakes and MINIMALIST landscapes of Lapland in its purest state, which of course we will photograph.
In the afternoon, we will take part in the SNOWMOBILE activity (included). We will go on a ride to venture into the immensity of the vast winter landscapes of Swedish Lapland. Places that are inaccessible and that we can only reach by this means.
Sunset in Jukkasjärvi and, at night, northern lights session, weather and solar conditions permitting.

View profileFrequently asked questions
Is seeing the northern lights guaranteed?
No. Nobody can guarantee auroras: they depend on solar activity and on the sky being clear. What we do is maximise the chances: Abisko lies at about 68º north latitude, benefits from the Blue Hole phenomenon (which favours clear patches while other areas are cloudy) and we devote several nights to going out in search of them, adapting the plan to the weather and to solar activity forecasts.
What clothing do I need to bring?
This is an Arctic winter trip, with sub-zero temperatures and especially cold nights, and we will spend several hours in a row outdoors, standing still, waiting for the auroras. The best approach is to dress in layers: a thermal base layer (top and bottoms), a fleece or similar second layer, a warm, waterproof and windproof outer jacket, snow or thermal trousers, waterproof winter boots with insulated soles and thermal socks, a hat, a neck gaiter or buff, and gloves suitable for photography (thin ones for operating the camera and thick gloves or mittens to wear over them). It is better to bring too much clothing than too little.
What photography equipment is recommended?
A camera with good high-ISO performance, a fast wide-angle lens (as wide open as possible, for example f/2.8 or faster), a sturdy tripod, spare batteries (the cold drains them quickly), enough memory cards, an intervalometer or remote release, and a headlamp, preferably with a red light so as not to dazzle the rest of the group. A bag to protect your equipment from condensation when entering the cabins is also highly recommended.
Do I need night photography experience?
It is not essential, but you should know how to operate your camera in manual mode. Eduardo will accompany you on the field sessions to help you with settings, focusing in the dark and composition. If you want to arrive better prepared, practise night photography with a tripod and manual focusing in low light before the trip.
What level of fitness is required?
The trip is relaxed and accessible. We will take short walks around Abisko and travel by van, but the main effort is enduring the cold and the long nights outdoors. If you have any mobility or health limitations, please contact us before booking so that we can assess it with you.
What are the accommodation and rooms like?
We will spend 2 nights in a hotel at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport (shared double room with breakfast), the first and the last night of the trip, and 4 nights in cabins in Abisko, in the surroundings of the National Park. Those who prefer a single room can request one for a supplement, subject to availability. The specific accommodation will be confirmed by the organisation.
Are flights included?
No. The price of the trip does not include the flights Madrid – Stockholm – Madrid or Stockholm – Kiruna – Stockholm. We will tell you the recommended flights so that the whole group travels together: outbound to Stockholm on Saturday 27 February, flight to Kiruna on Sunday 28, return to Stockholm on Thursday 4 March and flight to Madrid on Friday 5. Fares vary depending on the date of purchase, so it is advisable to book in advance once the trip is confirmed.
What is the snowmobile excursion like?
We will take a ride through the vast winter landscapes of Swedish Lapland, to places that can only be reached by this means, and it is included in the price. The details of the activity (duration, driving rules and requirements such as a driving licence or minimum age) will be confirmed with the local operator before the trip; we recommend bringing your valid driving licence.
What happens if the weather or solar activity is not on our side?
The programme is flexible. Conditions in the Arctic change every day and every night, so the guide may change the order of activities and locations, always with a reasoned decision, to make the most of the best windows of clear sky and solar activity and to ensure the safety of the group. The same applies to wildlife (moose and reindeer): it is possible to see them, but it is never guaranteed.
How many of us are travelling and who accompanies us?
We are a small group of a maximum of 7 participants, accompanied throughout the trip by Eduardo Marcos Quevedo, Zero Expeditions guide and one of the best photographers of this specialty in Spain. We travel together in a 9-seater van, which gives us the flexibility to move to the best locations and to repeat outings when conditions advise it.
