We have been running this route for over seven years, fine-tuning every edition — dates, sailing routes, hours of light — until we found the combination we were after: icebergs, whales and Arctic trekking in a single trip.
Ilulissat is the gateway to the Disko Bay Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier calves some of the largest icebergs on the planet.
We stay in Ilulissat all week and head out on the water every day on a private boat, exclusive to the group. Seven outings of around three hours each, every one to a different corner of the bay and the Icefjord, scheduled for morning or evening depending on what we want to photograph. Between one trip and the next, trekking on foot across the tundra and around the fjord.
The dates are no accident. In late August the Arctic summer still leaves long days and mild temperatures, the whales are still feeding in the bay, and the nights begin to darken just enough for the season’s first auroras. It is a balance you do not get in high summer, with too much light, or in winter, with no boat trips and no accessible trekking.

Accommodation
Hotel in Ilulissat for the whole week, in a double room. No changes of base: the bay and its icebergs are the backdrop from the first day to the last.
Boat trips
Seven outings on a private boat, exclusive to the group, of around three hours each. The timing of each trip is set a few weeks before departure according to the light, the weather and the group’s interests, and is then adjusted day by day.
On land
Guided trekking outings across the tundra and around the Icefjord, alternating with the boat trips to photograph the Arctic landscape from another perspective.
Group and climate
Maximum seven places. Average temperature of 4–11 °C.
The northern lights depend on solar activity and clear skies: we will look for the best nights, but they cannot be guaranteed.
