About the expedition
We have been running this route for over seven years, fine-tuning every edition — dates, sailing routes, hours of light — until we found the combination we were after: icebergs, whales and Arctic trekking in a single trip.
Ilulissat is the gateway to the Disko Bay Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier calves some of the largest icebergs on the planet.
We stay in Ilulissat all week and head out on the water every day on a private boat, exclusive to the group. Seven outings of around three hours each, every one to a different corner of the bay and the Icefjord, scheduled for morning or evening depending on what we want to photograph. Between one trip and the next, trekking on foot across the tundra and around the fjord.
The dates are no accident. In late August the Arctic summer still leaves long days and mild temperatures, the whales are still feeding in the bay, and the nights begin to darken just enough for the season's first auroras. It is a balance you do not get in high summer, with too much light, or in winter, with no boat trips and no accessible trekking.

The backbone of the trip is the seven outings on a private boat, one a day, of around three hours each. Each one covers a different corner of Disko Bay and the Icefjord: fronts of freshly calved icebergs, narrow channels between blocks of ice, and open water where the whales feed at the end of the summer.
Depending on what we want to photograph, the outing is scheduled for morning or evening. In low, raking light, to work the volume and texture of the ice. At night, when the sky is clear, to look for the season's first auroras over the fjord.
The days are rounded out with guided trekking on foot across the tundra and around the Icefjord, alternating with the boat trips to see the same landscape from land and make the most of the daylight hours.

Frequently asked questions
How many places are there on the expedition?
A maximum of seven. The boat is private and exclusive to the group, so on no outing do we share it with other travellers.
When is the timing of each boat trip decided?
The schedule is set a few weeks before departure, according to the light, the weather and the group's interests. It is then adjusted day by day: if a night promises clear skies, the outing moves to the evening.
Will we see the northern lights?
There is a chance, but it is not guaranteed. In late August the nights begin to darken just enough for the season's first auroras; from there it depends on solar activity and on the sky being clear.
Are whale sightings guaranteed?
No. These are the dates when whales are still feeding in the bay and the daily outings multiply the opportunities, but no wildlife sighting can be guaranteed.
What is the temperature and what clothing is needed?
The average at these dates is between 4 and 11 °C, and it feels colder at sea. Travel with a layering system, a windproof and waterproof jacket, gloves and a hat. On the boat you spend long stretches standing still on deck.
Are flights included?
No. International flights to Ilulissat are each traveller's own responsibility. The trip begins and ends at Ilulissat airport, with transfers to the hotel included.
What about meals?
Neither meals nor drinks are included. Accommodation is in a double room.
Can I travel in a single room?
Yes. The price is per person in a double room; the single room carries a supplement, confirmed at the time of booking.
