Wildlife hides for the red deer rut and raptors on a private estate in the Extremadura dehesa
At a glance
About the expedition
In September the Extremadura dehesa comes into rut. As the light drops, red deer stags bellow, clash and herd the hinds among holm oaks and cork oaks. This is the berrea, one of the great sounds of the Iberian autumn. El Millarón is a private estate deep in the dehesa, with permanent hides and restricted access, set up to photograph wildlife away from the crowds.
Over three days we alternate rut sessions at dawn and dusk with eagle hides for raptors at close range, leaving room for a small-bird hide at a waterhole. We stay on the estate itself, full board, in a small group.
This is not an armchair trip: early starts, entering the hides before first light, then sitting still and quiet for hours in a confined space. In return you photograph wild animals in the open, at a distance you rarely get outside a hide.

View profileFrequently asked questions
Do I need experience in wildlife photography?
It is not essential, but being comfortable with your camera helps. Hides call for patience and working in low light; the Zero guide helps with settings and composition.
What gear do I need?
A telephoto lens is strongly recommended for the rut and the eagle hides. A body that handles high ISO well helps in the first and last hours of the day. Lens rental is not included.
Are deer or eagles guaranteed?
No. We work with wild animals in the open: we look for the best conditions, but their activity depends on the weather, the light and the stage of the rut. In the September rut the odds are high, though never a certainty.
What are the hides like?
Small spaces where you sit still and quiet for several hours. They may be shared between photographers. Comfortable, muted clothing and a warm layer for the early hours are a good idea.
Can a non-photographing companion come along?
Subject to availability, a companion may join without a photo or video camera. It is best to check when booking.
