Refinement sunrise (second movement): a different sector of the estuary—new foregrounds (stakes, eel-traps, reed fans). Boats pivot slowly with tide; every ripple draws a leading line. Keep voices low, keep shore pristine—work with the place, not over it.

    • Technique: CPL for color depth on wood/tiles, ND/GND balance, micro-adjust horizon and spacing.
Photo walk in Aveiro: moliceiros in motion, azulejos and art nouveau.
    • Transfer to Porto in the afternoon.
    • Porto shoot: Ribeira, Dom Luís I bridge, Jardim do Morro and the Vila Nova de Gaia quays.
    • Sunset: golden hour over ochre facades, the Douro’s sheen and classic rabelo silhouettes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Aveiro in January?

It is the coldest month of the year and one of the wettest: highs of 13–15 °C and lows of 5–7 °C, with 9 to 17 rainy days depending on the source. These are climate averages, not a forecast. Sunrises on the estuary call for warm clothing and a rain jacket.

Will there be a full moon?

Yes. The full moon is on 22 January (12:17 UTC) and the new moon was on 7 January. During the trip the moon is almost full and sets around sunrise. With a full moon the tides are spring tides, that is, of greater range, which is taken into account when planning each sunrise.

How do we get to Aveiro?

The meeting point is Porto airport on the first day, Thursday 21 January; the guide flies from Madrid. From the airport a 9-seat van takes the group to Aveiro and, on the last day, back to Porto airport. Flights are not included. All times are Portugal time, one hour behind Spain.

How are the rooms allocated, and what meals are there?

Double room, shared with another participant, for all three nights in the same 4-star hotel in Aveiro, with breakfast included. Those who prefer a single room pay a supplement of €110 per person. Lunches and dinners are at your own choice; the guide offers hand-picked suggestions.

How do the tides affect the programme?

Sunrises and sunsets are planned around the sunrise time and the tide table for each day. The location and time of each session are confirmed a few days before departure, depending on the tide and the weather.

What equipment should I bring?

A sturdy tripod, CPL, ND (3 to 10 stops) and GND filters, a wide-angle zoom (16–35 mm or similar) and a short telephoto (70–200 mm). Warm clothing, a rain jacket and footwear that can get wet on the jetty.

How many participants are there, and in which language is the guiding?

Up to 7 photographers, with personal attention in the field. Guiding is bilingual, in English and Spanish. The minimum age is 18.
