In September the Extremadura dehesa comes into rut. As the light drops, red deer stags bellow, clash and herd the hinds among holm oaks and cork oaks. This is the berrea, one of the great sounds of the Iberian autumn. El Millarón is a private estate deep in the dehesa, with permanent hides and restricted access, set up to photograph wildlife away from the crowds.

Over three days we alternate rut sessions at dawn and dusk with eagle hides for raptors at close range, leaving room for a small-bird hide at a waterhole. We stay on the estate itself, full board, in a small group.

This is not an armchair trip: early starts, entering the hides before first light, then sitting still and quiet for hours in a confined space. In return you photograph wild animals in the open, at a distance you rarely get outside a hide.
